Live Blackjack Etiquette

Due to the social nature of blackjack, it is important to follow proper blackjack manners when playing at a casino. By following our play blackjack etiquette guidelines, you can avoid the grumbling of fellow players down in luck and warnings from the dealers. No one wants to be clueless at the table and following our simple guidelines can prepare you for live blackjack.

A popular mistake that many new players make is not using hand signals. Dealers count on players to use hand signals (as well as verbal) to avoid confusion and miscommunication. Casinos also encourage dealers to have players use hand signals so if there is ever any confusion on a play, casinos can go back and replay the hand (with their security cameras) and see what hand signal the player used.

Your bet should be made in a single, neat stack with the highest chip on the bottom and it should not be touched after the hand has been dealt. You should be prepared to make your bet when the dealer comes to you and you can make your bet for doubling or splitting before the dealer comes.

There are two ways to tip the dealer at the blackjack table. one is you can  make a bet for him while the other is just giving them a tip outside the game. If you decide to have the dealer play with you, place your bet and include a chip on the top of the betting circle (it can be as little as a $1, the mimum at the table doesn’t apply for players betting the dealers tip). If you win the dealer pays you and themselves and are able to pocket your tip. If you are unsure of how this works you can always ask the dealer where to put the chip and let them know its their tip (if the hand is won).

Because big-stakes players often prefer to play alone, if you approach a table with one person clear it with him before you sit down, out of courtesy. In a face-up game you will never touch your cards, while in a face-down game you should only use one hand to touch you cards, which should be kept over the table and not bent. If you’re using a simple strategy card, don’t refer to it every hand, you should know the basics before you sit down. Communication is open with the dealer and if a mistake was made it is ok to tell him, in addition, you can ask for advice or a point total.
